Hey look, it’s The Man With The Yellow Hat!
No, just kidding. It’s my dad. He doesn’t usually look like this – he’s decked out in his nuclear protective gear here. No particular reason for posting this picture except that it makes me smile.
Anyway. As you may recall, my dad is a runner. He’s been running for 50+years, and even though he’s more of a recreational runner these days, he used to be a competitive athlete. He’s a pretty old fashioned runner – he’s never found much need for the gadgets & gear that are popular with runners these days. Or maybe he’s just a minimalist? Either way, he keeps it simple – with the exception of nighttime safety gear, all he needs is a good pair of running shoes.
Apparently I did not inherit that gene.
We spent Thanksgiving with my parents this year, and after dinner I presented my dad with a fun surprise – my November StrideBox. StrideBox, as I mentioned last month, is a subscription box made just for runners. Every box is loaded with exactly the type of stuff my dad doesn’t use – gadgets, fuel, recovery drinks, etc. – and I thought it would be fun to get his opinion on some of this stuff.
Here we are unboxing the StrideBox. (Don’t miss my dad dispensing a little fatherly advice at about 4:58.)
If you’re curious, here’s a bit of info about the products in the StrideBox.

Now for the fun part. Since I’m not able to run right now, I’m giving away my October StrideBox to someone who can! I’m on the line between gear junkie and not so much. In the army I can’t have a lot of gear when running for PT, so that forces me to not rely on sweet compression pants or hydration packs. But I still gotta have my garmin fenix.
Liz Lew says
Garmin, stingers, and gum
AER says
I tend not to buy too much gear for myself, but I love getting it!
Jen says
Gear junkie 🙂
Michelle B says
I’d say I’m a gear junkie. Is that bad? I love having a good gps watch, good shoes, compression socks and sometimes I like to bring a handheld water bottle with me.
Theresa C. says
I am a total gear junkie! It’s so sad but at least I use it all.

i love subscription boxes, i like to try new products!
Erica @ Erica Finds says
A little from column A and a little from column B – probably more junkie than not!
Vanessa Junkin says
I would say I’m mostly a no-frills runner, but recently I’ve gotten more into some new gear!
Lisa V says
Sample boxes are a great way to try out different things! I love being able to do this and not be committed!
Kimberly G says
This subscription box looks awesome!
I always run with my cell phone and Harmon watch
Jeffrey says
I always run with my Garmin and flashing lights when in the dark, for obvious safety reasons. Other than that, shoes, shorts and a shirt!
Shiduna Townsend says
As long as I have my music and gum.I’m pretty much ok.
Joe says
That’s awesome and always best to spend it with family for the holidays.
Teresa Millstone says
Always wondered if I’d really use the stuff inside boxes like this.
sharon says
I’m the same way! I’ve gotten a few of them over the years. I love the novelty of opening them up and seeing the new stuff, but I’m also a creature of habit.
Lindsey @ livinglovingrunner says
I love sample boxes! This one looks great!
Mary says
Too funny about your dad! I don’t really use much for my running but it’s not for lack of want, more for lack of info/availability/cash
Christine says
I started as a minimalist, but now that I run ultras, I’ve turned into a total gear junkie. Long trail runs need a lot of stuff.
Tara Pittman says
Soon you will be able to run again. I had injuries last year and had to stop running, it was no fun
Julie says
I’m somewhere in between! I’ve got to have my phone and the right clothing and headlamp, but after that I don’t need much. Oh, and I also need Body Glide and a good water bottle for long runs. Okay, so maybe I’m more of a gear junkie than I thought! 🙂
