2013 Holiday Gift Guide for Runners
Highlights Magazine Subscriptions
It would be fair to say that my sister and I were a little spoiled as children.
If there was something that we wanted, we usually got it (with the exception, of course of an Easy Bake Oven and a Barbie Dream House – but I’ll save my prepubescent angst for another post).
But without a doubt, the greatest gift my parents ever gave us was a love of reading. I have vivid memories of reading with my dad before bed every night…of walking to the library with my mom, sometimes several times a week…of my sister and I getting in trouble for hiding our books in our laps and reading at the dinner table.
I was also a Highlights kid. Do you remember Highlights magazine? You probably read it in the waiting room at your doctor or dentist’s office. I did too. But I was also lucky enough to have my own subscription to Highlights. Remember how awesome it was to get mail as a kid, back before bills and junk mail…when anything that came in the mail for you was sure to be a birthday card or something fun? I remember my heart leaping with excitement every month when my Highlights arrived. I’d pore over every page in one sitting – laughing at the jokes, rolling my eyes at Goofus & Gallant, and saving the Hidden Pictures, my favorite section, for last.
Now I’m able to give my daughters the same gift – by reading to them every night, by taking them to the library, and by giving them their own subscription to Highlights magazine. They love it – and they also share my love for Hidden Pictures.
Highlights has grown quite a bit since I was an avid reader back in the 1970s and 1980s. They now offer 3 different magazine subscriptions: Highlights (for ages 6-12), High Five (for ages 2-6), and Hello (for ages 0-2). They also have various Puzzle Book Clubs, including a Hidden Pictures Club (with separate publications for ages 3-6 and 6+). And a subscription to Highlights is a perfect last minute gift (trust me, I’m a last minute gift expert) because you can purchase it online in a snap and then just stick one of these adorable printable gift announcements in a stocking or card. Easy peasy.
Visit the Highlights store to select the best subscription option for your child. My girls love Highlights magazine, and I’m pretty sure that I like it almost as much as they do.
This holiday season, one of my readers (and a very lucky child) will have the chance to win their own subscription to Highlights magazine! Just enter on the Rafflecopter below – good luck, and happy reading!

Oh, I loved Highlights as a kid! And funny, I never got that Easy Bake Oven or Barbie Dream House either.

I bought an Easy Bake Oven for the girls, and we were all thoroughly disappointed. I didn’t buy the new expensive version though. Maybe that one is better. I’m still hoping that my parents will show up with the Barbie Dream House some day. 🙂

I loved highlights as a kid- shhhh I still do love it! I love the “whats hidden” section where you have to find things that are hidden with in the picture. They used to have a section also where there were things wrong with the picture and you had to find those wrong things. I hope I can win this for my kids. They would love it!

The Hidden Pictures is my favorite section too! I wasn’t sure if my kids would have the patience for it, but they’re really into it.

I hope I win this, my youngest sister absolutely loves highlights! Her subscription ran out awhile back, and it broke her heart. Maybe I can win this for her.
