You guys know I like to be as real as possible here. So here’s what’s real: sometimes I stink. I mean, really, really can’t-stand-my-own-smell stink.
In my defense, I don’t stink ALL the time. I shower and wear clean clothes. But after I run? I’m just all sorts of yuck. And I’m not naming names, but there’s a certain member of my household who smells even worse than I do after a workout. O. M. G.
Bodies are easy to un-stink. A hot shower, some soap & shampoo, and POOF – you smell like a human being again. But clothes aren’t always quite as simple, especially workout clothes. If you’ve ever pulled freshly-washed-but-still-smelly clothes out of the washing machine, then you know exactly what I’m talking about here. Think about it – many of the fabrics that we rely on to wick moisture and support our bodies during workouts are designed to repel water – so of course they’re harder to clean with soap & water. And icky bacteria from sweat and body oils can get trapped in the fibers of your workout clothes, which makes it even harder to get rid of the odor.
I’ve tried a lot of things to get our workout clothes clean. Scented detergent, unscented detergent, powder detergent, sports detergent, scented fabric softener, unscented fabric softener, pre-wash treatments, baking soda, Borax, cold water, warm water, hot water, and every wash cycle available on my washing machine. I’ve washed the individual pieces separately. I’ve washed them and re-washed them. We even have a brand new washing machine And yet, despite all of my efforts, there are still a few pieces of workout clothing that I just can’t get the smell out of.
So obviously I was excited to try out WIN Detergent, which is specifically designed to remove sweat, oil, and odors from technical athletic/sports apparel. Would this finally be the answer?
Well. Sort of. More on that in a minute. First let me tell you about the product. The folks at WIN Detergent sent me 2 products to sample:
WIN Detergent Blue 32oz ($10.95) – detergent optimized to remove the odor-causing oils and bacteria from the synthetic fabrics used in today’s sports apparel. Good for approximately 21 loads.
WIN Detergent Green 32oz ($10.95) – similar product but dye-free, fragrance-free, and ideal for people with sensitive skin or sensitive noses.
My Thoughts
Overall, I like the product. I tried both the Blue and the Green detergents on several loads of laundry, and in general, both left my clothes smelling fresh and clean. While I prefer using fragrance-free and dye-free products, I actually preferred the Blue version of WIN detergent – it just seemed to do a better job at getting our icky workout clothes smelling and looking good again. The scent is not overpowering or overly perfumey – it’s just a nice, clean scent.
While I do like WIN Detergent, it wasn’t able to get the stinky odor out of a few of our worst pieces of clothing, even after multiple washings. Honestly, I suspect that those clothes are just too far gone…and that it’s time to go shopping.
