2013 Holiday Gift Guide for Runners
Yurbuds Inspire Sport Earphones
I can’t run without music.
Well, I guess that’s physiologically not true. I can put one foot in front of the other, swing my arms, generate forward motion without a soundtrack. But I’m NOT going to be happy about it – especially not if I’m running alone. You all know that I’ll run when I’m sick. When I’m injured. When I’m not properly dressed for the weather. But nothing will make me turn around and head home faster than the sound of my own feet hitting the pavement.
Now, at the same time, I’m not an audiofile or a gadget kind of girl. I don’t know anything about ambient noise, audio articulation, or neodymium magnets (seriously?). So if you’re in search of that kind of earphone review, then you should probably keep looking. But if you just like to listen to music while you run or work out, then read on.
So what exactly are Yurbuds? They are ergonomically designed earphones that are guaranteed not to fall out, even at extreme activity levels. There are 3 product styles – in-the-ear, behind-the-ear, and the adventure series, which is designed for the outdoor enthusiast. Some of their products are designed specifically for women (i.e., made to fit smaller ears).
The Review
I reviewed a pair of Inspire for Women in-the-ear earphones. The first thing I noticed when I took them out of the package was that they looked different from any other earbuds that I’ve worn. When Yurbuds says “in-the-ear,” they mean IN the ear.
I was a little nervous about putting something inside my ear and thought that it might feel something like putting in those squishy foam earplugs, which isn’t all that pleasant. But I read the directions, and they didn’t mention anything about pulling, rolling, or smooshing. I simply inserted the sound tunnel in my ear, rotated the earphone to activate the “Twist Lock” technology, and I easily got it in place on my first try. The earphone is covered in very soft, flexible silicone so it’s smooth to the touch, but it’s designed to fit right inside of the ear without any sort of manipulation. It was a perfect fit.
I jumped up and down and bobbed my head around for a while because, well, it’s just fun to watch yourself doing that in the mirror sometimes.
Then I took them out for a real spin – on a 5 mile run – and they stayed put the whole time. I didn’t have to fuss with them at all, which is saying a lot because I am a very fussy girl. And if my earphones were slipping or hurting or bugging me in any way, I would have fussed with them for all 5 miles.
My Yurbuds also stayed nice and dry on my hot, sweaty run. I’ve had earphones that sort of suctioned themselves to the inside of my ears when they got a bit sweaty. Not this time. I truly didn’t have to think about them the whole time I ran, except to occasionally stop and think, “Hey, I’m not thinking about my earphones.” And how did they sound? Well, they sounded great. I had music for my run and earphones that weren’t annoying me. That’s a success in my book.
The Details
Each set of Inspire for Women comes with two sizes of earphones (“enhancers”). They come in 6 colors – aqua, green, orange, pink, purple, and yellow. And here’s the technical stuff, in case any of you techies out there stuck around:
- 20Hz-20kHz frequency response
- consistent, premium sound produced by 15mm drivers
- Neodymium magnet
- Compatible with all smart phones, tablets, computers and audio devices featuring a 1/8” (3.5mm) headphone jack.
- sweat and water resistant
- reflective covering for extra nighttime safety (not all models)
- designed to allow ambient noise, permitting you to remain aware of your surroundings
My non-technical, un-audiofile, runner-girl opinion is that Yurbuds are my new favorite earphones. My old ones never even stood a chance.

oooooh. The Inspire for Women look awesome, as do the Focus for women. But it’s hard for me to wear over the ear/behind the ear buds with glasses 🙁 So either the Inspire or the Inspire Pro probably!
