The other day during an interview, I was asked to talk about staying healthy & fit despite some physical limitations (i.e., the hardware store in my back). I talked about exercising, getting enough sleep, drinking lots of water, staying active with my family. But I’ll be honest – when it came time to talk about nutrition, I was more than a little embarrassed.
Nutrition has pretty much always been my Achilles heel. I do try to make healthy food choices. But as a general rule, my appetite is poor. I’m not good at maintaining a meal schedule or listening to my body’s hunger cues.
I’ll save that for another post though. What I want to talk about today is feeding my family. Regardless of my appetite, I have to keep 3 other people fed. That alone is challenging – but to add insult to injury, I’m not a very good cook.

Meal Delivery Services (or Help, My Wife Can’t Cook.)
My husband resisted this (and still does, to some extent) for a long time. But he must have gotten tired of doing 90% of the cooking around here, because he finally relented. He gave me the thumbs up to at least try some of them out.
First up was Blue Apron. At some point I’ll give a full recap of my experience. But in summary – we weren’t impressed. The first meal-in-a-box was just plain bad. The second tasted pretty good but took me 4 times the estimated prep time. Vic eventually had to step in and help, which basically defeated the purpose of using a meal delivery service in the first place.
Groupon: Hello Fresh
Next up on our list is HelloFresh. We’ve heard a lot of good things about it, particularly the quality & taste of the ingredients. I’m not sure if the recipes will be any more Sharon-friendly than Blue Apron, but I’m willing to give it a try.
I was waiting to subscribe to HelloFresh until I had a discount. And yay! Today while scrolling through some Groupon merchants I found HelloFresh. And when I clicked on the link, I found 31 coupons and deals for HelloFresh. There are some good ones on there, so if you’re thinking about giving it a try, make sure you scroll through the whole list of Groupon deals.
And shout-out to Groupon – before writing this post, I thought Groupon was only for event tickets and small business promos. I had no idea that they had deals from so many of my regular shopping spots: Target, Amazon, Walgreens, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sam’s Club, Barnes & Noble, and SO many more.
I’ll keep you posted on our meal delivery experiment. Have you tried Hello Fresh? Is there another meal delivery company that you’d recommend?
I'd love to hear your thoughts...
